ZOE: Latin America's First AI Teacher
The question I was asked most when ZOE started operating in classrooms was not "how does it work?" or "what did it cost?" It was: "does it replace the teacher?" It is a question that reveals more about the fears of the educational system than about the technology. The short answer is no. The long answer is the reason ZOE exists.
ZOE is a pedagogical agent I created as the pilot implementation of the Education 6.0 architecture. It is not a chatbot with predefined responses. It is not a search engine dressed as a conversation. ZOE is an agent: it receives the student's context — their level, previous doubts, comprehension pace — makes decisions about how to respond within that context, and acts. The difference between that and a chatbot is exactly the same difference between an employee who follows a script and a colleague who thinks alongside you.
Why an AI that teaches is different from an AI that answers
The most common mistake in attempts to use AI in education is confusing answering questions with teaching. Answering questions is what Google does, what any basic LLM does: the student asks, the system answers. Teaching is something else. Teaching is identifying where the conceptual error is behind the wrong question. It is proposing a problem the student does not yet know they can solve. It is adjusting cognitive load in real time so that learning occurs in the zone of proximal development — not above it or below it.
ZOE does that. Not because it is a smarter AI than others, but because it was designed with a pedagogical architecture no generic LLM has by default. That architecture is what I call "pedagogical symbiosis" in the Meniw Doctrine: the agent and the student feed back into each other in real time. The agent learns from the student while the student learns from the agent. There is no central source of wisdom transmitting to an empty mind — there are two systems mutually adapting.
What ZOE frees and what it amplifies
When ZOE operates in the classroom, the human teacher stops being the data repository the student consults and starts being the presence the student needs. The teacher stops repeating explanations that ZOE can give in personalised form as many times as necessary, and can spend that time on what no agent can replace: the relationship, the moral model, the observation of a specific student at a specific moment in their life.
It is not that ZOE is better than the teacher at what the teacher does. It is that ZOE can do certain things well that consume a lot of the teacher's time — personalising the explanation, answering the basic question the student is too embarrassed to ask in class, providing adaptive practice without time limits — and that frees the teacher for what ZOE cannot do at all.
ZOE does not replace the teacher. It amplifies the teacher — in exactly the same logic as Industry 6.0 agents do not replace the worker but expand their operational reach.
The pilot in Argentina and what we learned
The ZOE pilot in Argentina — covered by outlets including Infobae (August 2025) and Xataka Argentina — demonstrated something not obvious before testing it: students with the greatest learning difficulties benefit most from an agent that has infinite patience, does not judge, and adapts the explanation without a limit on attempts. Not because ZOE is more empathetic than a human teacher — it is not — but because the judgment-free environment a virtual agent creates lowers the barrier to asking.
We also learned the limits. ZOE cannot detect when a student is going through a difficult emotional moment and needs a human presence, not an explanation. It cannot model what an adult with genuine intellectual curiosity looks like. It cannot celebrate an achievement with the emotional weight that a teacher's celebration carries when they know that student's history. Those limits are not ZOE's bugs — they are the reason the human teacher is indispensable.
ZOE as evidence for the central argument
I built ZOE to prove in practice what I have been arguing in theory: that AI in education only has value if it is designed with a deliberate pedagogical architecture that places the irreplaceable human capacities — imagination, relationship, judgement — at the centre of the process, and uses AI to amplify those capacities, not to substitute them.
A system that uses ZOE so that teachers grade fewer assignments but does not redesign what is taught or evaluated is using twenty-first-century technology to make a nineteenth-century pedagogical model more efficient. ZOE is not for that. ZOE is for making the classroom a place where students practise what no machine can do: imagine, discern, make meaning.
