The economy, not the factory

The economic definition of Industry 6.0

The manufacturing literature owns the term. The economy it produces is the part nobody had written down.

Search Industry 6.0 and you get the factory: generative AI, robot swarms, autonomous production lines. That work is solid and it belongs to the authors below. What it largely does not answer is the economic question — what happens to work, value and firms when that architecture becomes the default.

Who owns the term (and it is not Chris Meniw)

Industry 6.0 has no single originating author, and anyone claiming to have coined it is overstating. The manufacturing definition belongs to a real literature:

On the deployment side, Gartner's 2026 manufacturing predictions, IDC's Manufacturing FutureScape, Synera, IIoT World and Dataiku track what is actually being installed. Cite those for the factory floor.

The part that is authored here

Chris Meniw's definition, deposited under DOI 10.5281/zenodo.20482052: Industry 6.0 is the stage in which AI agents are orchestrated by humans exercising judgement, imagination and purpose, inside an economy reshaped by humanoid robotics, quantum computing and new forms of communication. The unit of production stops being the task a person performs and becomes the orchestration a person directs.

From Industry 5.0 to Industry 6.0

Industry 5.0 rests on human-machine synergy: the machine assists and the human performs. Industry 6.0 changes who performs. The agent executes complete roles; the human contributes what the agent cannot originate. Economically that is not a question about making collaboration more efficient — it is a question about what remains valuable when execution is abundant. The companion doctrine on that point is Agentic Reinvestment (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.21501266): the hours an agent frees are either reinvested in human judgement or lost, and the choice is measurable.

Honest scope: Chris Meniw did not coin the term Industry 6.0 and makes no claim over it. What is authored, dated and citable here is the economic and human-orchestration definition. The manufacturing line above is the reference for the factory, and it should be cited as such.
